Complexes of ditopic carbo- and thio-carbohydrazone ligands--mononuclear, 1D chain, dinuclear and tetranuclear examples

Ligands based on carbo- and thio-carbohydrazone cores, modified with pyridine, carboxylate and oxime ends, have been examined. They display a tautomeric versatility based on the flexible nature of the hydrazone linkages, leading to varied coordination motifs. Examples of mononuclear (Co(II), Ni(II)), dinuclear (Co(III)), 1D chain (Cu(II)) and square [2 × 2] grid (Ni(II)) complexes are obtained. Ferromagnetic (Cu(II)) and antiferromagnetic (Ni(II)) exchange is observed, with spin coupling in the Ni(II)(4) square grids propagated through the μ-O and μ-S bridges. Weak antiferromagnetic exchange (J = -6.0 cm(-1)) is observed for the μ-O bridged grid, despite the large Ni-O-Ni angles (137-141°), while for the μ-S bridged grids much stronger exchange is observed (J = -148 cm(-1), -198 cm(-1)). This is much larger than expected based on the Ni-S-Ni bridge angles (151-169°), and is associated with the soft (less polarizing than oxygen) nature of the sulfur bridge, which would allow for much more efficient transmission of spin exchange than observed in the μ-O bridged case. Structures and variable temperature magnetic data are included, and spin exchange is analyzed using normal Heisenberg exchange models. No examples involving oxime (NO) bridging are reported, which reflects the positioning of the N,O and N,S donor combinations in each ligand, and the preferred coordination through these donor atoms.     

5,6-dihydropyridine: synthesis and characterization

5,6-dihydropyridine 1 is synthesized either by flash vacuum thermolysis of 1-azabicyclo[2.2.2] oct-2-ene 3 or by dehydrochlorination over solid bases of N-chloro-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine 4 and characterized at low temperature by its ¹H and ¹³C nmr and ir spectra.     

Interlayer water molecules in vanadium pentoxide hydrate. 8. Dynamic properties by quasi-elastic neutron scattering

The dynamics of water molecules in the layered vanadium pentoxide hydrate, V(2)O(5).nH(2)O, were studied by quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) measurements. Heterogeneity of the dynamic properties was confirmed by alpha-relaxation model analysis. Translational diffusion of monolayer and double-layer water molecules is by site-to-site diffusion and is reduced relative to that of bulk water. Water molecules lose their mobility markedly and solidify with decreasing temperature. However, mobile water remains at 253 K. Rotational diffusion coefficients are unaffected by confinement and are very similar to the bulk values determined at temperatures in the range 253-298 K. The dynamic speed characterized by QENS is much faster than that expected from the data determined by deuterium NMR (DNMR) measurements at low temperatures.     

Quantitative solid phase microextraction – Gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis of five megastigmatrienone isomers in aged wine

Megastigmatrienone is a key flavor compound in tobacco. It has also been detected in wine, where it may contribute to a tobacco/incense aroma, but its importance and concentration in wines had never previously been evaluated.     

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography for enhanced analysis of naphthas: new column combination involving permethylated cyclodextrin in the second dimension

A new column association using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography for the detailed molecular analysis of hydrocarbon mixtures is reported in this paper. In order to compare the impact of two different secondary columns, a novel column combination relying on a GC x 2GC system was used. This system is based on a non-polar first column (PONA) combined with both a permethylated beta-cyclodextrin (beta-Dex 120) stationary phase and a polysilphenylensiloxane (BPX 50) in the second dimension. Compared to BPX 50 stationary phase, the implementation of beta-cyclodextrin columns as the second dimension was found to improve the resolution between paraffins and naphthenes in the naphtha range but not in the middle distillate range. Attempts to improve the results and to understand the interaction mechanism remained unsuccessful. Therefore, the benefits of the beta-Dex 120-column are only demonstrated on heavy naphtha cut for the quantitation of hydrocarbons.     

Ethene-1,1-disulfonyl Difluoride (EDSF) for SuFEx Click Chemistry: Synthesis of SuFExable 1,1-Bissulfonylfluoride Substituted Cyclobutene Hubs

We present the synthesis of 1,1-bis(fluorosulfonyl)-2-(pyridin-1-ium-1-yl)ethan-1-ide, a bench-stable precursor to ethene-1,1-disulfonyl difluoride (EDSF). The novel SuFEx reagent, EDSF, is demonstrated in the preparation of 26 unique 1,1-bissulfonylfluoride substituted cyclobutenes via a cycloaddition reaction. The regioselective click cycloaddition reaction is rapid, straightforward, and highly efficient, enabling the generation of highly functionalized 4-membered ring (4MR) carbocycles. These carbocycles are valuable structural motifs found in numerous bioactive natural products and pharmaceutically relevant small molecules. Additionally, we showcase diversification of the novel cyclobutene cores through selective Cs₂CO₃-activated SuFEx click chemistry between a single S−F group and an aryl alcohol, yielding the corresponding sulfonate ester products with high efficiency. Finally, density functional theory calculations offer mechanistic insights about the reaction pathway.     

Imparting antifouling properties of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) hydrogels by grafting poly(oligoethylene glycol methyl ether acrylate)

The antifouling properties of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate- co-methyl methacrylate) hydrogels were improved by the surface grafting of a brush of poly(oligoethylene glycol methyl ether acrylate) [poly(OEGA)]. The atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of OEGA (degree of polymerization = 8) was initiated from the preactivated surface of the hydrogel under mild conditions, thus in water at 25 degrees C. The catalytic system was optimized on the basis of two ligands [1,1,4,7,10,10-hexamethyl-triethylenetetramine (HMTETA) or tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me6TREN)] and two copper salts (CuIBr or CuICl). Faster polymerization was observed for the Me 6TREN/CuIBr combination. The chemical composition and morphology of the coated surface were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurements by the water droplet and captive bubble methods, scanning electron microscopy, and environmental scanning electron microscopy. The hydrophilicity of the surface increased with the molar mass of the grafted poly(OEGA) chains, and the surface modifications were reported in parallel. The antifouling properties of the coatings were tested by in vitro protein adsorption and cell adhesion tests, with green fluorescent protein, beta-lactamase, and lens epithelial cells, as model proteins and model cells, respectively. The grafted poly(OEGA) brush decreased the nonspecific protein adsorption and imparted high cell repellency to the hydrogel surface.
